Water Heater Preventive Maintenance
Water Heater Preventative Maintence
Maintaining your water heater in tip top shape should be a priority and entails several simple steps. The first step involves periodically checking for leaks. Check all the pipe connections, the valves and underneath the unit.
Along with the periodic leak check, the correct operation of the temperature/pressure relief valve should also verified. Since obviously the water in the tank is hot and could cause scalding burns, it is advisable to exercise caution in this step. To check, pull up or push down on the valve handle. Hot water should then flow from the overflow pipe. If it does not, it’s time to call the plumber.
Another step that can be done to check on the operation of the water heater is to periodically drain some water from the bottom of the unit. This can be done by opening the drain faucet which is located at to bottom of the heater. Again, as before, this water will be hot. If desired or necessary, a garden hose could be attached. Drain the water into a bucket. This will remove sediment from the bottom of the heater which could impair its heating efficiency.
